PTC Heating Elements with Protective Housings

Self-regulating PTC heating elements in ceramic, plastic, aluminum and resin-encapsulated housings

Available Housing Types
  • Ceramic housing PTC heater
  • Plastic housing PTC heater
  • Aluminum housing PTC heater
  • Resin-encapsulated PTC heater

What Is a PTC Heating Element with a Housing?

A PTC heating element with a protective housing combines a self-regulating PTC ceramic heating element with an outer housing designed for mechanical protection, electrical insulation, heat transfer or environmental protection.

Compared with a bare PTC heating chip, a housed PTC heating element is supplied as a more complete, ready-to-mount component. The housing can be selected according to the required operating temperature, electrical isolation, heat spreading, mechanical strength and resistance to moisture or vibration.

PTCWORKS provides multiple housing configurations for custom PTC heating applications, including ceramic, plastic, aluminum and resin-encapsulated designs. Housing dimensions, shape, lead wires and mounting features can be adapted to your application requirements.

Housing Selection

PTC Heater Housing Material Comparison

Different housing materials provide different combinations of electrical insulation, temperature stability, heat transfer, mechanical durability and environmental protection.

Housing TypeMain Advantages & Trade-offs
Ceramic Housing Excellent electrical insulation and high-temperature stability. Ceramic provides strong insulation performance but is more brittle than metal housings.
Plastic Housing Cost-effective and suitable for molded shapes and application-specific designs. Maximum operating temperature depends on the selected plastic material.
Aluminum Housing Excellent heat spreading and mechanical durability. Aluminum is suitable when efficient surface heat transfer and structural strength are important, with appropriate electrical isolation design.
Resin-Encapsulated Provides strong sealing and protection against moisture, vibration and environmental exposure. Repair or rework can be more difficult after encapsulation.
Applications

PTC Heating Element Housing Applications

Housed PTC heating elements can be designed for direct surface heating or integrated into larger assemblies where a protected and ready-to-mount heating component is required.

Automotive & Seat Heating

Compact housed PTC elements can provide localized surface heating in automotive components and seating systems.

Appliance Heating

Suitable for heating plates, compact heating assemblies and small appliances where controlled PTC heating is required.

Industrial Equipment

Protective housings can simplify integration into industrial equipment requiring surface heating, heat retention or temperature protection.

Embedded Heating Assemblies

Custom dimensions, lead wires and mounting features allow housed PTC heating elements to be integrated into application-specific assemblies.

FAQ

PTC Heating Element Housing Questions

Common questions about housed PTC heating elements, housing materials and customization.

What is a PTC heating element with a protective housing? +
A PTC heating element with a protective housing combines a self-regulating PTC ceramic heating element with an outer housing. The housing can provide electrical insulation, mechanical protection, heat spreading or environmental sealing depending on the selected design.
Which housing material should I choose for a PTC heater? +
Ceramic is suitable when electrical insulation and temperature stability are priorities. Plastic is useful for cost-effective molded designs. Aluminum provides efficient heat spreading and mechanical durability, while resin encapsulation is useful when moisture and vibration protection are important.
Can PTC heating element housings be customized? +
Yes. PTCWORKS can customize housing material, shape, dimensions, lead wire type and length, and mounting features according to the application. Send your target dimensions and mounting requirements to sales@ptcworks.com .
What is the difference between a housed PTC heater and a bare PTC heating chip? +
A bare PTC heating chip is the heating element itself without a protective housing. A housed PTC heating element integrates the PTC ceramic element into a protective structure, making it easier to install as a self-contained component when the application requires additional protection or mounting features.
Can I request a custom PTC heating element sample? +
Yes. Send your target voltage, power, operating temperature, preferred housing material, dimensions and mounting requirements to sales@ptcworks.com and we can discuss sample requirements.
