What it is, in the Escape specifically
On the Ford Escape, the Supplemental PTC Heater is an option bundled into the Cold Weather Package, mounted inside the HVAC air plenum on the passenger side of the dash. When it actually turns on
Owner and service documentation describes the system activating only under specific cold-weather conditions — broadly, when engine coolant temperature and outside ambient temperature are both low enough that cabin heat would otherwise take too long to arrive, and switching off automatically once coolant and ambient temperatures climb past their respective thresholds. It’s built around multiple heating elements with variable duty-cycle control, so output scales rather than simply switching fully on or off.
