Most cabin heat in a gasoline car is free — it’s waste heat pulled off the engine coolant. That system breaks down the moment the “free” heat source isn’t reliably hot enough, which is exactly when a supplemental PTC heater shows up.
The short answer
A supplemental PTC heater is a self-regulating PTC ceramic heating element added alongside a vehicle’s or system’s primary heat source to make up a shortfall — most commonly in hybrids, diesels, and EVs where the engine (or lack of one) doesn’t reliably produce enough waste heat for cabin comfort and windshield defrost.
Why it’s needed at all
A conventional gasoline engine runs continuously while driving and throws off plenty of waste heat, which a heater core simply borrows from the coolant loop. That model breaks in a few common cases:
- Hybrids — the engine shuts off frequently to save fuel, so coolant temperature isn’t reliably high enough for consistent cabin heat.
- Diesels — modern diesel engines are thermally efficient enough that they sometimes don’t generate enough waste heat for fast cabin warm-up, especially at idle or in cold climates.
- EVs — there’s no combustion waste heat at all, so cabin heating has to come from somewhere else in the system, often a PTC element supplementing or driving a heat pump.
In each case, a supplemental PTC heater is typically mounted in the coolant loop (a liquid heater architecture) or directly in the HVAC airflow path (an air heater architecture), adding heat exactly where the primary source falls short.
